The Black Hills are rich with authentic Cowboy history. This area has touted the name ‘Wild West’ for over a century and if you are looking to have yourself a rootin’ tootin’ old fashioned adventure you have come to the right place. The Fort Hays Chuckwagon is just up the road from Rushmore Shadows resort and is serving up cowboy cuisine and fun family entertainment.
I had the chance to visit the Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper & Cowboy Music Show this past week and was eager to see what all the excitement was about. As you drive up the hill and into the parking lot you will feel as if you have driven right into the Wild West of this region’s past. Fort Hays is home to many attractions including the movie set of, “Dances With Wolves.” Here you can visit an old west town, experience rope making, watch a unique penny press, and so much more.
Enjoy delectable cowboy fare up to three times daily. Choose from a delicious pancake breakfast, cowboy lunch, or a chuckwagon supper.
My husband and I, along with a group of our friends are from the Black Hills but had not had the chance to catch the Cowboy Music Show. So we saddled up for the Chuckwagon Dinner last week.
As you enter the rustic building that houses the dinner and show, the aroma of traditional and delicious cowboy fare fills the air. We grabbed our tin plates and cups and headed through the line to be served by authentic cowboys and cowgirls.
You choose your meat options (BBQ beef or Chicken), then you are encouraged to hold on tight as the server smashes your baked potato down onto your tin plate. “It tastes better that way,” he laughs. As you make your way through the line you’re are given delicious homemade applesauce (my personal favorite), buttermilk biscuits, spice cake, coffee, and the best lemonade I’ve ever had served fresh into your tin cup.
The dinner was delicious and followed by the Cowboy Music Show. We couldn’t keep our eyes off the incredibly talented musicians as they tackled artists from Johnny Cash to Mozart. We cheered for the fiddler as she took on, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and won the competition against herself (Playing both Johnny & the Devil’s parts). The Oompah of the polka made us want to dance, and we laughed as Elvis entered the building.
If you are looking for a fun cowboy adventure for your entire family, you won’t want to miss The Fort Hays Chuckwagon Supper & Cowboy Music Show. We give it a big, “Yee Haw!”
And, it’s just a few miles up the Road on Hwy 16. Next time you stay at Rushmore Shadows make sure to visit Fort Hays!
Fall reminds me of ghosts and goblins, being thankful for friends and family, and crisp cool nights with warm blankets. My favorite fall things include hoodies, pumpkin spiced EVERYTHING, and of course FOOTBALL!!!
Fall is also the time of year in the Midwest where we start to put away our tents, RVs and motor homes, and start vacationing in different ways . One thing you may not know is five of our brand new Lodges are open at Rushmore Shadows until Decembcer 1st. This means that while you’re talking to member services about planning your winter condo vacations to Mexico or Florida, you can take a trip and stay in the newest and most stunning cabins we offer!
Nothing says autumn like the coziness of our beautiful Lodges and the smell of fresh, new pine. Although we have closed down our RV and tent sites for the winter, you can still stay in one of these new lodges, and feel some of that serenity for yourself.
If your membership includes cabins at Midwest Outdoor Resorts, I suggest you take the time to come down and see us one last time before winter starts. You and your family will not be disappointed in the accommodations. If you would like more information on how to make the lodges a permanent part of your family’s membership, please feel free to contact me. I would be happy to help! And I bet you didn’t know that the biggest, best and newest cabins aren’t the only benefits of having a Lodge Membership! Happy fall to all of our members! We look forward to seeing you soon!
Picture sitting outside your camper and the sun is just starting to burn off that morning mist, you feel a slight morning breeze as you take a sip of morning coffee and you say to yourself, “This is my Happy Place.”

Winter is on the horizon folks but don’t let that discourage you from getting excited about camping in November! Even in the off-season, the Black Hills are still alive with great concerts and other live entertainment to see. Luckily for all MOR members, Rushmore Shadows Resort still has cabins available throughout November this year.
Starting out this month the Dahl Arts Center of Rapid City is hosting an Americana Music Festival featuring seven free local bands throughout the day and a ticketed evening concert. Other concerts coming to the Black Hills in November include Hairball at Deadwood Mountain Grand, Manheim Steamroller Christmas at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, and Rodney Carrington at Deadwood Mountain Grand.
If you’re looking for a little competition, the Rapid City Rush hockey season is back in full swing with seven home games throughout the month. The Rush currently has an undefeated season. GO RUSH! The Black Hills will also be hosting the PRS Bull Riding World Finals on the third weekend of November. Both of these events are being held only eleven miles up the road from Rushmore Shadows Resort at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

It’s always a great day here at Rushmore Shadows. But this week has been especially great! On Tuesday June 25th, we had the privilege of getting to watch Troy Fairbanks and the Buffalo Dancers. Troy along with his son and grandson came to the resort to teach the members about the Lakota Sioux Tradition with dance and song. Want more information on the events happening at all your MOR locations? Check out the Calendar tab on each of the park’s pages
